In the past DayStar Ranch has taken
a few rescued horses on donation, but we believe that the best way to help horses is through educating people. If we help people to succeed in working with horses and appreciating them, then we are helping horses we
have not even met.
Sometimes people do not understand
why a horse behaves as it does, and so they may blame the horse when they have a less than wonderful experience with them. Inadequate knowledge can make being around, or on a horse, a risky activity for both
the horse and the human. By learning how horses think and to see things from
their perspective, people become able to predict horse behavior and prevent most of the undesirable responses that lead to
mishaps.
When life circumstances change,
horses often become displaced. We can help some of these horses through our foster-a-horse
program ( Help DSR Help Horses ). When
we do accept a donated horse, we set up a plan to find them “useful employment” often as companions with a new
owner. While they are with us we work to restore their health if necessary, or
to improve their training and ground manners. A horse’s value increases
as the horse becomes better trained, and their security is enhanced when they have a person who loves them. The more people know about horses the more the chances for successful relationship.
DayStar Ranch usually does not keep
its own horses more than a few months as we have been so successful at matching people with donated horses and who contract
to provide them with TLC and a lifelong home. To help us to do more of this you
may sponsor a horse ( Help DSR Help Horses ) to cover its expenses through the transition
time.
